Tongdean Clinic Lends its Support to Charity Evening at the House of Lords
On March 2, Tongdean’s own Christopher Liu and his wife Vivienne Liu were excited to attend a prominent charity event held at the world-famous London parliamentary building, The House of Lords.
The event, which was hosted by Lord Nat Wei and Lord Tim Clement-Jones, was in support of the Chinese Welfare Trust and was aimed at raising awareness of the charity and its issues.
The Chinese Welfare Trust was founded in 2008. Its goals are to help, empower and support poor, elderly and vulnerable Chinese people living within the UK. Modelled on the successful national charity, Jewish Care, the first priority at the Chinese Welfare Trust is to care for Chinese elders in Britain. The team are keen to work with housing associations and housing schemes that could help home those most in need.
The Chinese Welfare Trust House of Lords Reception welcomed distinguished figures from China and the UK. Lord Clement Jones welcomed Mandarin and Chinese guests with a Chinese New Year toast before proceeding to discuss associations between the UK and China. The second host at the reception, Lord Wei, has a strong connection to the topics discussed that evening as he is the first British-born Chinese member of the House of Lords.
Like other Chinese Welfare Trust events, the function at the House of Lords provided an opportunity to learn more about the charity and how others can get involved in tackling the issues of the Chinese community, all under the splendid roof of the Palace of Westminster.
The Palace of Westminster is home to the House of Commons and the House of Lords – the two UK parliament houses. The neo-Gothic spires and sprawling building below is an iconic site around the world and has become a symbol of British democracy. Today, its maze of traditional rooms play host to functions and events all year round.
The Tongdean Eye Clinic are proud to advocate local and national charities. Alongside our support for the Chinese Welfare Trust, Christopher Liu has sponsored a creative project and has appeared at many symposiums, from EVER to discussions at a local college. Tongdean Eye Clinic looks forward to our continued work within the community and supporting good causes around the world for years to come.
